Smart access for a safer community

November 2024 Access Control & Identity Management, Residential Estate (Industry), Products & Solutions

As urban living shifts toward residential estates and high-rise buildings that emphasise security and convenience, implementing advanced access control systems—such as AI-powered facial recognition—marks a crucial advancement in future-proofing these environments.

Implementing robust access control not only improves security, but also fosters a sense of community and peace of mind among residents. Many people find facial recognition technology easy to use, which can enhance the overall living experience in the community.

Understanding access control

Access control refers to the security measures that regulate who can enter or exit a building or designated area. In residential estates and high-rise buildings, this typically involves a combination of physical barriers (like gates and locked doors) and technological solutions (such as key cards, biometric scanners, and surveillance cameras).

The goal is to create a secure environment, while maintaining the convenience of access for residents and authorised personnel and should ideally include functionality for visitor management.

The need for enhanced security

Residential estates often face unique security challenges, including unauthorised entry, theft, and vandalism. Traditional methods, such as key cards or PIN codes, can be susceptible to theft or sharing, leading to potential security breaches. Thus, there is a growing demand for more robust solutions that can seamlessly authenticate individuals, while maintaining a high level of convenience.

The latest on the market is Suprema’s recently launched BioEntry W3 facial authentication access control device, designed for durability and resilience.

Suprema BioEntry W3

In an era where security breaches are increasingly common and personal safety is paramount, the emergence of advanced biometric technology is a welcome development. Suprema's BioEntry W3 integrates AI-powered facial authentication into a sleek design that prioritises security, privacy and user experience.

The BioEntry W3 is not just another facial recognition device; it represents a significant leap forward in how we think about access control. Equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-camera system, it captures both 2D and 3D facial images, allowing for enhanced accuracy and depth perception. This capability minimises the risk of spoofing attempts through photos or masks, addressing one of the most pressing concerns in biometric security.

With its advanced AI algorithms, the W3 can effectively identify and authenticate individuals in real time, even in challenging lighting conditions or diverse environmental factors. Operating efficiently across a wide temperature range—from -20°C to 50°C—the BioEntry W3 is designed to perform consistently, whether outdoors or indoors.

Durability in various environments is ensured with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance and a further IK08 rating for vandal resistance against strong physical force. This adaptability is crucial in today’s dynamic settings, where security measures must be robust and flexible.

One of the standout features of the BioEntry W3 is its speed and accuracy. The device can recognise faces in less than a second, streamlining entry processes without compromising security. This rapid identification is complemented by its ability to manage up to 30 000 faces enrolled on a device, 100 000 users using RFID cards and 100 000 users if their facial templates are stored on their mobile devices.

Beyond facial recognition, the device supports multiple forms of authentication, including a wide range of RFID cards as well as mobile credentials (NFC and BLE), which provides convenient entry via smartphones.

Keeping privacy in mind, BioEntry W3 is equipped with an innovative security feature - Template on Mobile (ToM), which lets users authenticate access through their mobile devices, ensuring that facial templates are never stored on any external systems. This flexibility allows residents to choose their preferred method of access, further increasing convenience, while maintaining security and privacy.

In addition to its technical capabilities, the BioEntry W3 boasts an ultra-slim profile allowing for seamless integration into any environment, including mullion-type installations on door frames, where it fits perfectly without compromising aesthetics.

As residential estates increasingly prioritise security and convenience, adopting advanced access control systems like AI-powered facial authentication represents a significant step forward. Devices such as the BioEntry W3 not only enhance security, but also improve the quality of life for residents by providing a fast, reliable, and user-friendly access solution. By embracing these technologies, residential estates can create safer and more welcoming environments for all.
