Vumacam and NAVIC enhance SafeCity initiative

January 2024 Integrated Solutions, Security Services & Risk Management

Vumacam and NAVIC, two of South Africa's most respected surveillance technology and vehicle intelligence providers, are proud to announce an alliance that will greatly expand the coverage and impact of the SafeCity initiative across the country. The initiative has, to date, been powered only by Vumacam technology and cameras.

The collaboration – underpinned by infrastructure and technology – reinforces SafeCity's core values of community, shared responsibility, and the means to create a safer environment for all communities, regardless of socio-economic status.

Vumacam and NAVIC will combine their technology and extensive networks to combat crime more effectively. As a cooperative venture, Vumacam and NAVIC will maintain autonomy in the services provided to clients, while working to expand the SafeCity initiative as a collective. This will enhance the initiative’s support for private and public law enforcement in protecting lives and livelihoods in communities across South Africa.

The power of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR, also known as LPR) technology has been a game-changer in both NAVIC and Vumacam operations. Vumacam's network statistics show that 80% of arrests or successful interceptions are due to ANPR cameras flagging vehicles of interest (VOIs) linked to an array of crimes, from fraud and theft to more serious offences such as murder and aggravated assault. Similarly, NAVIC's ANPR network and cloud platform has a significant effect on apprehension rates, illustrating the efficacy of the technology in crime prevention and detection.

Vumacam’s track record of success in Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Mogale City complement NAVIC’s strong ANPR and related tools and operational experience in both the large and smaller metros, as well as bespoke services for rural areas across the country. The company also has a history of successful collaboration with security companies, municipalities, neighbourhood watch organisations and community groups across South Africa.

Building on this success, Vumacam has recently expanded the SafeCity Initiative into Tshwane, aiming to provide more comprehensive coverage. CEO Ricky Croock says, “We anticipate making the same impactful contributions in Tshwane as we have seen in other regions, leveraging the proven effectiveness of Vumacam’s infrastructure and NAVIC’s advanced tools. This expansion further strengthens our commitment to enhancing safety and security, extending our reach to benefit more communities and stakeholders across the country.”

"Collaborating with NAVIC brings an additional level of expertise and network expansion to the SafeCity initiative. Combining our key competencies and teams’ expertise will enhance our ability to deliver solutions that make a real difference in supporting private and public law enforcement and curbing crime."

Jason Berry, CEO of NAVIC, adds, “This partnership is a testament to the philosophy that South Africa’s fight against crime is more effective when the key role players work together. This lays the foundation for further collaboration between the two companies, on unarguably the country's largest ANPR/CCTV network, benefitting multiple market sectors.” The alliance will support the SafeCity initiative and is set to immediately enhance coordinated efforts to tackle crime in South Africa.
