New surveillance and analytics (with or without AI)

Issue 2 2022 Surveillance

Many businesses have been in a situation where they were confronted with a scenario where they needed to review or ask for surveillance footage from an incident. In most cases, the surveillance footage was of some value providing more clarity to the case at hand.

So, there is no doubt regarding the value that surveillance provides to clarify events leading up to a specific incident, however, is that enough? In the day and age that we live in and due to the increase of crime and the ingenuity of the criminals, normal surveillance is important, but no longer sufficient for the modern organisation.

Most organisations are still reliant on a legacy CCTV camera solution to provide 'after the fact' footage. In most cases, legacy CCTV cameras are useful for auditing purposes, however, not sufficient for prevention or proactively identifying and avoiding incidents. To have this capability available organisations could either invest in expensive edge devices e.g., cameras or a VMS platform, or use a cloud video recorder (CVR) adding intelligence to cameras via a software platform.

The cloud video recorder will provide intelligence to existing analogue or IP cameras using software. The analytics can be done via the cloud and could include the following options: facial collection and recognition, people counting, human pose detection, activity heatmaps, privacy, intrusion detection watch list management which will allow organisations to elevate their surveillance efforts to a new level.
