Reducing stadium visitor violence

CCTV Handbook 2015 Surveillance, Surveillance

Violence at sports events in Europe has increased to an alarming degree in recent years. The need to monitor sports event spectators at a large stadium in Empoli, Italy, led to the appointment of a reputable system integrator to ensure the deployment of a suitable surveillance system. The solution needed to provide comprehensive coverage of the entire stadium and the capability to view live video with playback capabilities within the control room.

Based on its long-standing relationship with Sunell Technologies, the system integrator elected to design a system around Sunell’s IP wireless HD network cameras and a third-party DVR platform. Eric Xu, from Sunell Technologies, explains that the Sunell five Megapixel IP bullet cameras and two Megapixel IP mini-dome cameras were selected for their feature-rich capabilities as well as their ability to meet the bid specification and monitor all angles and locations within the stadium.

A number of challenges faced the systems integrator in achieving the stipulated solution. Primarily, the third-party solution provider’s record, playback and data access DVR had already been selected and any surveillance cameras needed to interface to this system. “Our cameras needed to seamlessly integrate with the DVR. Our ONVIF compliance assisted in the achievement of this requirement. A full demonstration of the Sunell cameras quickly convinced the stadium tender team that the SN-IPR54/40AKDN bullet cameras and SN-IPR54/14ZDR mini dome cameras were the best solution,” Xu points out.

Some areas of the stadium required the use of a camera that could provide a high resolution image whilst simultaneously overcoming the poor ambient lighting conditions. Xu says that the full HD two megapixel mini vandalproof dome cameras are ideally suited to the challenges of this type of environment. The 55 bullet cameras installed throughout the stadium have two-way audio, one-channel alarm output, support VBR/CBR bitrate, are IP66 rated and have an infrared range of at least 40 metres.

Due to the financial crisis faced by Italy at the time of the project implementation, the installation took longer than expected but the client was pleased with the result. “Not only did the Sunell technology fit the bill for our requirements but it exceeded our expectations in terms of the superior image quality achieved. The Sunell cameras’ ability to integrate with the DVR selected was the final stamp of approval,” says the client.
