Control and security consoles for Africa

March/April 2001 Infrastructure

Progroup, an exhibitor at Securex 2001, designs and builds control and security consoles which are shipped to companies, parastatals and government departments throughout the Sub-continent. Established in 1976, the company specialises in high quality cabinet-making and technical furniture/fittings for the security industry.

Until recently Progroup has concentrated on a select client-base which includes the Reserve Bank - Pretoria, Business Against Crime in Capetown, Iscor Vanderbijl Park, most of the large retail groups, the Transnet/Carlton Centre security project and the Gold Reef City Casino Complex.

An exceptional response from visitors to Securex clamouring for information on the company's products has initiated a reassessment of the market. Says Penny Bond, CEO of Progroup Manufacturing, "Each installation must be designed to suit the application for which it is intended. Our multidisciplined design team comprising industrial, interior and ergonomic design specialists takes very detailed briefs from clients before attempting to put 'pen to paper'. Figuratively speaking that is, because all of our designs are created on sophisticated CAD programs which we have assisted in developing."

Bond continues, "Practical design aspects such as cable and ventilation ducting, access for technical services and ambient temperatures linked to fan specifications must be taken into account. Modular construction is another important criteria. Some clients require that we build consoles to suit the hardware and equipment that will be installed. While others prefer the flexibility offered by 19" racking systems or similar modular configurations. Exterior finishes cannot be ignored. Some clients prioritise durability while others are more concerned with aesthetic appeal. Fortunately we can offer a wide variety of surface finishes from traditional wood veneers, spray painted Duco, hi-tech Formica laminates to metal laminates and even deck plating."

The size and extent of Progroup's manufacturing operation is a real competitive advantage. Their factory, storage and spray painting facilities, covering over 3000 m2 under-roof enables them to build complete installations in their workshops. Clients can view and inspect the finished consoles, request alterations and make final adjustments before they are transported to site. Hardware and equipment suppliers are able to complete their installations in a convenient workshop environment before finally linking to the client's security network.

Progroup is interested in contacting new clients and forming business associations with security contractors that can benefit from its products and services.
