There is something useful on the Internet

February 2010 News & Events

Welcome to the second edition of HSS for 2010, the year when the national chaos finds meaning – or so the marketing promises. Before we start, please be aware that if you are missing any FIFA 2010 World Cup kit you may have been expecting from China or thereabouts, you are in trouble. Shortly before finalising this issue, the news came over the wires that fake soccer kit worth millions (at Fifa prices) had been confiscated by customs. One wonders if that would have been the case without Fifa’s trademark?

Nevertheless, more importantly, this issue covers the sensitive area of fraud in the workplace. Leigh Yorke-Smith held a round-table to discuss the issue, and delivers insightful ideas on pre- and post-employment screening. Recruitment is not what is used to be.

And on the topic of things not being what they used to be, this issue sees the launch of Hi-Tech Security Solutions’ series of webinars. Instead of risking life and limb, and countless heart attacks in the traffic, Hi-Tech Security Solutions now brings the latest local and international security moves to your work or home computer screen. We knew we would find a use for the Internet eventually.

A webinar is a Web-based presentation, instead of holding presentations at a single location to highlight new technologies and solutions, Hi-Tech Security Solutions’ new Webinar series will offer interactive presentations from market leaders over the Internet in order to keep readers informed of the latest news and moves in the security industry. The idea is to have an interactive discussion as if everyone was sitting at a formal presentation, without the travel.

Anyone interested in viewing the presentations can simply register online and log in on the appropriate day and experience the presentation from the comfort of their office or home – all you need is a decent Internet connection. We have tested local broadband speeds (even Telkom’s 512 Kbps offering) and it works.

Viewers will be able to view the presentation while the presenter talks them through it, even downloading the presentation for later review. Questions can be asked in realtime and the presenter or facilitator will answer it as would happen in a traditional presentation. Presentations will also be archived so you can show your friends.

We plan to make these events regular occurrences, offering security players a way to reach a wide audience, and readers a way to attend seminars and presentations without losing too much time from their day. Of course, our usual conferences such as Retail Risk, BiometriX and iLegal will still be held, although this year they have been moved to a post-soccer timeframe.

Enjoy this issue and, as always, feel free to send your comments and criticisms to [email protected]
