Editor's note

July 2008 News & Events

The first year of the Primedia Initiative Crime Line yielded 471 arrests countrywide. Details on www.crimeline.co.za revealed (at the time of writing this on 12 June) that arrests had been made in:

* Gauteng - 293

* Western Cape - 143

* North West - 19

* KwaZulu-Natal - 11

* Free State - 4

* Limpopo - 1

Moreover, in excess of R20 million worth of goods had been seized/recovered by the SAPS following tip-offs to Crime Line, including:

* R9 million worth of counterfeit DVDs.

* R1 million worth of counterfeit clothing.

* R1 million worth of counterfeit cigarettes.

* R1 million worth of abandoned motor vehicles.

* R3 million worth of stolen motor vehicles.

* R500 000 worth of endangered cycads.

According to a story on the website, 'Many cases are still in the court system, some have been withdrawn. However, 124 cases have been successfully finalised, including 11 counterfeit DVD cases, 24 drug possession cases and 26 drug dealing cases.'

On the subject of help from the public, the Democratic Alliance in May called for private security firms to be given more power ( http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?art_id=vn20080520055707356C186238&set_id=1&click_id=13&sf=) If the results of the communities' involvement in fighting crime with Crime Line is anything to go by, this may not be a bad idea.

And here is a story I will reserve comment on. See what you think... http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_1501852,00.html
