July 2007 News & Events

As I write this, Securex is almost over and by all accounts it has been another success, well done to all the people who made it so!

Another success story in the making is the recently-launched Crime Line, a Primedia initiative that enables citizens to actively - and anonymously - help crack down on crime.

Through the project, which has been endorsed by the South African Police Service, people can blow the whistle on criminals or suspicious activities by sending an SMS to 32211 and the information given will be passed on to the relevant authorities. (SMSes are charged at R1 each)

The information can be about a crime that has taken place or that is going to take place and there is also the option to submit the information online at www.crimeline.co.za.

And it is good to hear that the public is putting the service to good use - a few arrests have already been made following tip-offs from alert citizens, the first arrest coming just hours after the project was launched (see http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_2128180,00. Html). As the website claims: "It is easy, it is anonymous, it is up to you" so let us all do our bit to assist the police in getting criminals off the streets.

I hope you enjoy the read this month, with topics ranging from security in the industrial sector, to biometrics, to polygraph examiner standards... there is sure to be something for everyone!

Till next month,

Lynne
