The strategic relevance of managed detection and response

Issue 1 2025 Security Services & Risk Management

Paul Stuttard.

As cyberthreats evolve, organisations recognise the value of proactive and managed security solutions, making managed detection and response (MDR) a strategic choice for many. This service is gaining traction for several reasons.

Expertise access: Globally, there is a shortage of skilled multi-disciplined cybersecurity experts, with some experts estimating there are at least four million unfulfilled vacancies. MDR as a service entitles organisations to leverage the expertise of security professionals without needing to hire full-time staff. MDR providers often have teams with specialised threat detection and incident response skills.

24/7 monitoring: If an organisation does not have the right capacity of trained and experienced cybersecurity experts, it cannot monitor the environment around the clock. MDR services offer continuous monitoring, ensuring threats are detected and addressed in real time.

Advanced threat detection: MDR services typically use advanced technologies, such as machine learning and behavioural analytics, to identify sophisticated threats that traditional security measures might miss. To this end, MDR improves a company’s ability to avoid or mitigate attacks.

Cost-effectiveness: For many organisations, especially small- to medium-sized enterprises, outsourcing to an MDR provider can be more cost-effective than building an in-house security team and infrastructure. Skilled people are hard to find and retain. They are also expensive and susceptible to ‘better offers’ due to the global shortage.

Rapid incident response: In any breach or intrusion, the mean time to fix or defend becomes vital to the cost outcome of the event. MDR services provide a quick response to security incidents, helping to contain and mitigate threats before they escalate into more significant issues.

Focus on the business: The amount of event reporting can become a heavy burden. Every event, even false positives, requires investigating. By outsourcing detection and response, organisations can focus on their core business operations without the distraction of managing cybersecurity.

Scalability: Cost is always a significant commercial consideration especially as a company expands. MDR services can easily scale with an organisation’s growth, providing flexible solutions that adapt to changing needs and threats.

Compliance support: Many MDR providers help organisations meet compliance requirements by implementing best practices and reporting capabilities. Some even offer compensation should a breach occur.

Holistic security approach: The more defensive measures an organisation can integrate the better. MDR services often include threat intelligence, vulnerability management, and security awareness training. As such, MDR offers a more comprehensive approach to cybersecurity.

With the rise of phishing attacks and ransomware incidents in South Africa, MDR's 24/7 monitoring ensures businesses are always protected. Additionally, with the shortage of local cybersecurity talent, MDR offers an affordable alternative to building internal teams while still maintaining world-class threat detection and incident response capabilities.

Now more than ever, the combination of scalability, real-time incident response, and compliance support offered by MDR is essential in South Africa’s fight against cybercrime.
