It does not feel like a year ago that we introduced the Access Control Handbook, does it? Well, it is back this year, and even bigger - as you will see.
11 September marked the fourth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York, in which 2749 people died. My thoughts at the time of the attacks remain the same: why is so much more emphasis usually placed on controlling who goes into a building and not enough on how to get people out of a building when there is an emergency? Sure it is important to keep the bad guys out, but not at the cost of anyone else's life, and there are solutions; they just need to be thought through properly. And that is part of what we hope Hi-Tech Security Solutions equips you with - the knowledge to ask the right questions!
In this issue of Hi-Tech we continue our celebrations of the magazine's 10th anniversary, this month tying in with the Access Control Handbook and focusing on the most influential players in that field.
As always, Dr Craig Donald addresses some important issues relating to CCTV, this time the topic is 'Storing CCTV video material', find out what the solution is.
Our feature this month is on security in the transportation sector and if that is your interest, do not forget to pop in at the Airport Industry Showcase at the Sandton Convention Centre from 19 to 21 October.
Meantime there is lots to read here, enjoy!

The HSS 10 Most Influential series of reports, initiated in the September 2005 issue of Hi-Tech Security Solutions, as part of the of Hi-Tech Security Solutions 10th Anniversary celebrations, continues this month with our 'Most Influential Access Control'.
The list of 10 vendors (and the best of the rest) are not chosen according to revenue, market share, market capitalisation or any other financial metric. They are subjective choices. Of course, we will have done our homework, and asked you what your thoughts are, and factored the industry's view of itself into our thinking.
Not everyone will agree with all of our choices - particularly the vendors that fail to make the cut - but one thing is assured: it will be a fascinating read that will undoubtedly cause a stir. And just to re-iterate, the list is an alphabetical one devoid of ranking. It includes companies local and international. Large and small. Niche (focused) and broad-based (end-to-end solutions). If you do not agree with our choices, or think we have missed someone important and influential, do let us know. We would value your feedback.
