Helping South African university students and staff to stay safe

Issue 7 2023 News & Events

In light of recent news announcements of violence on student campuses, gender-based violence, and safety concerns around universities in South Africa, the Buzzer app is a tool to help support the community within universities and learning institutions to stay safe and report incidents on campus; and get help fast.

Buzzer is a free mobile app that allows users to quickly and easily report incidents of crime, violence, or harassment to campus security and other relevant authorities. The app also provides users with access to emergency resources, such as medical care, counselling, and legal support.

Buzzer is particularly important for students and staff at universities in South Africa, where safety concerns have plagued in recent years. In 2022, there were over 1000 reported incidents of crime and violence on South African university campuses. Additionally, a recent study found that one in five South African women have experienced gender-based violence on campus.

Buzzer can help make university campuses safer by providing students and staff with a quick and easy way to report incidents and get help. The app also allows users to report incidents anonymously, which can encourage more people to come forward and report crime.

“Buzzer is an essential tool for students and staff at universities in South Africa,” said Keri Cross, Founder of Buzzer. “The app provides a safe and convenient way to report incidents and get help fast. We urge all students and staff to download the Buzzer app and use it to help make our campuses safer for everyone.”

How Buzzer works

To use Buzzer, users need to download the app from the App Store or Google Play, create an account and add a primary location and important personal information, including medical aid details and allergy information.

Once logged in, users can report incidents by tapping the report button. For emergencies, users can tap the SOS button on the app's home screen. Users can also provide additional information about the incident, such as the date, time, and location of the incident, as well as a description of what happened.

Once an incident is reported, Buzzer will send an alert to connected responders and the community around them, as well as any law enforcement, university bodies or other relevant authorities that can respond to the incident.

By upgrading to a premium membership of R89 per month, users can add up to three personal emergency contacts who will receive their alerts and calls for help. By adding up to three locations, users can also keep an eye on safety-related reports and incidents in other areas, such as family or friends.
