Veeam’s route to immutability

Issue 5 2023 News & Events, Information Security, Infrastructure

According to the Veeam Ransomware Trends Report 2023, 93% of attacks target backup repositories, and 45% target production data. This means that ransomware is here to stay, and businesses must adapt to this reality by strengthening their defences. Veeam Software, the leader in data protection and ransomware recovery, has showcased how South African businesses can effectively tackle cybersecurity during the VeeamON Tour: Expand 2023 event.

Held at Focus Rooms in Johannesburg, Veeam representatives, local experts, partners, and the company’s strategic alliances discussed strategies and best practices against ransomware and how to leverage the 500+ new features and enhancements of Veeam Backup & Replication v12 – the foundation of the Veeam Data Platform, a single platform delivering more advanced data security, recovery, and hybrid cloud capabilities across expanding and complex IT environments – multi-cloud, virtual, hybrid, physical, SaaS (M365, Salesforce) and Kubernetes.

Key highlights from the event included:

• The opening keynote was presented by Michael Cade, Global Field CTO Cloud-Native Product Strategy at Veeam, who elaborated security fundamentals, cyber resilience, and how to keep current with cyberthreat trends.

• The Women in Tech breakfast panel discussion was hosted by Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, and Lisa Strydom, Senior Manager Channel and Alliances Africa at Veeam with a focus on ‘The importance of having diverse voices at the table’. They were joined by fellow panellists and key players from the industry including Celeste Le Grange, Head of Channel Commercial, Mid-market and SMB at Hewlett Packard Enterprise; Busisiwe Zelda Letsoalo, Assistant Director ICT Systems Administration at the National Department of Health; Lorna Hardie, Senior Director Sub-Saharan Africa at VMware; Janetta Cosenza, Advanced Technology Executive at First Technology; and Cathy Leso, CIO at the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.

Strydom said, “It was such an honour to host the Women in Tech breakfast panel as this indicates that through conversations of this nature, we are working together to advance the careers of women in the industry. With the input of diverse voices, we can address various challenges and identify opportunities that need to be addressed in both the market and the organisations in which we all work.”’

Veeam’s leadership in data protection and ransomware recovery status was reinforced when it was announced that it had been ranked the top global provider by (IDC) in its latest IDC semi-annual Software Tracker, 2022H2 for Data Replication & Protection Software. The tracker reports that Veeam, with a year-over-year growth rate (not adjusted for constant currency) of 8.1%, grew faster than the other top five vendors and the overall market average. According to the tracker, Veeam’s revenue grew 8.4% sequentially over the first half of 2022. EMEA retained its top regional market share position in the report.

Key sponsors of VeeamON Tour: Expand 2023 included platinum sponsor VMware, as well as gold sponsors ExaGrid, Lenovo and Datacentrix.
