Selecting the correct access control system

Issue 4 2023 Access Control & Identity Management

A question that is often glossed over, but which needs to be considered seriously is, ‘how do I choose the right solution’? This is important because it’s not just a system, it’s an entire solution that needs to fit to your needs.

I often come across end users who have purchased a system and found out that is not what they expected, or they have a system that over-promised and under-delivered. Sometimes, these shortfalls are hidden, sometimes a salesperson just does not know how to execute the complete solution. And sometimes the end user just doesn’t explain (or know) what they actually need.

There are, unfortunately, not a lot of competent companies out there that can do all the above on their own. Don’t always judge a quote by its price tag. Often, you’re paying for the years of experience that reside behind the staff of that company. Don’t be afraid of asking for credential certificates if they claim to be accredited. Certificates often have a finite life and with new technology, the technicians must stay up to date with the product or brand they are installing/selling. Technologies change, adapt and keep up with the latest trends, technicians should too.

Here are some points to consider before signing on the dotted line.

1. Is it a trusted brand with credibility?

2. Is the brand supported?

a. Ask the technicians if they are supported by a higher power should they have an issue.

b. What are product repairs and warranties like?

3. When comparing quotes, ask the installer what they think about their competitors?

a. Integrity goes a long way, a competitor slandering another may give you an insight into their behaviour.

b. Who is the installer’s longest standing customer – can they provide a reference?

c. Are the quotes comparable in an ‘apples for apples’ sense?

4. Does the brand keep up with the latest security measures?

a. SSL.

b. OSDP.

c. Encrypted communication.

d. Are they POPIA compliant.

e. Do their products ‘call home’ like some eastern products?

5. How does the installer expect payment?

a. The installers also have suppliers to pay, a deposit is not an unreasonable request.

b. Are installation milestones setup so when certain parts of the project are complete, a milestone payment can be released?

An installer who is willing to answer these questions may guide you on making the right choice, the above list is no silver bullet, but may lead you to a better outcome at the end.
