Access control in emergencies

Issue 2/3 2023 Access Control & Identity Management, Products & Solutions

More and more commercial and domestic buildings have access control systems installed. This is not only to manage user access, but also to protect people and assets. End-users look for access control systems that provide a diverse range of features as they enable efficient and flexible site management. Systems that provide higher levels of security in case of an emergency are particularly useful in settings such as schools, hospitals and many public buildings.

Paxton develops and manufactures access control solutions with smart features, including Security Lockdown, and Roll Call & Muster Reporting. These features take securing buildings to the next level in real-world scenarios where traditional locks and keys are limited in functionality.

Net2 is Paxton’s flagship access control software, and provides some forward thinking functionality. It is a user-friendly and flexible PC-based access control and door entry system, offering centralised administration and control of sites.

Net2’s Security Lockdown is a powerful feature in an emergency. System administrators can activate lockdown through a single action by disabling access through selected doors. This includes disabling exit buttons and relocking doors held open by time zones.

Steve Woodbridge, Global Training Manager at Paxton, said, “Security Lockdown is ideal for buildings or sensitive sites that need to secure the premises in the event of an emergency. All access can be restricted, either entering or leaving, at the touch of a button.

“The system also can be set to allow only specific security personnel free movement during a system lockdown, giving ultimate power to senior people that may still need access.”

Roll Call & Muster Reporting is another useful feature in case of an emergency. Woodbridge explains, “Net2 allows system administrators to create reports listing all users currently within a specified area. For example, when the fire alarm goes off,

Roll Call & Muster Reporting can be used to check that everyone is out of the building. These reports can be viewed remotely via a web browser or the Paxton app, Paxton Connect.

“These smart features bring additional benefits to user access and site management, ensuring further safety of the people and assets at a building.”
