Access barriers for distribution centre

Issue 1 2022 Logistics (Industry), Access Control & Identity Management, Products & Solutions

The Shoprite Group’s Freshmark distribution centre in Polokwane required extensive physical access barriers to ensure the security of assets and safety of all on site. Turnstar provided the organisation with a variety of its vehicle and personnel access products, including five Titan full-height hot-dip galvanised double turnstiles, a 1-metre wide and 2,125-metre high security gate with magnetic lock, one Titan full height 3-arm single turnstile, five 4-metre long Velocity Raptor spike barriers together with 4-metre long OPTIC LED octagonal arms and two 3-metre long Velocity vehicle barriers with OPTIC LED octagonal arms.

“The distribution centre is very large, at 9400 m2, so it was essential that the physical access barriers cater for the widespread nature of the premises,” says Turnstar CEO, Craig Sacks.

The Velocity automatic industrial vehicle barrier (with SwiftDrive technology) is geared around providing maximum security, without compromising on the safety of users. Safety is provided with a dual channel loop detector, which is integrated as a standard feature, together with an infrared beam transmitter and receiver kit.

Similarly, the Velocity Raptor, which features the Velocity boom together with an industrial tyre spike, contains an integrated OPTIC LED light strip for maximised visibility and a foolproof three-stage interlinked opening and closing procedure that ensures motorists cannot damage their vehicles while passing through the barrier:

• Opening procedure – the spikes lower, the barrier arm raises and the OPTIC LED barrier arm changes to green.

• Closing procedure – the OPTIC LED barrier arm changes to red, the barrier arm descends and then the spikes rise.

The Titan full height industrial turnstiles are ideal for use by employees and visitors in areas requiring high-volume access, together with high security levels.

“It’s no coincidence that the Titan is the turnstile of choice at a number of local and international factories and warehouses. It is extremely durable, seamlessly integrates with numerous biometric and card access systems, completely disallows unauthorised access and is designed with the safety of users in mind. This is accomplished with its Anti-trap safety system which means there is no mid-rotation locking or trapping in the event of power failures and load-shedding,” says Sacks.
