Guarding partnership launched

A new approach to guarding is set to change the face of what has long been viewed as the 'poor relation' of the local security industry. To date, guarding has always been viewed as the low end of the market. However, this perception is set to change with the launch of Kusela Security Solutions, a black empowerment company, which has attracted a partnership with ADT Security Guarding.

Under the leadership of managing director, Billy Selekane, and fellow directors, Bongani Raziya and Pieter du Toit, Kusela will take on the guarding industry with the rollout of its value system and its alternative approach to staff. Turning away from the classic tokenism often seen in black empowerment deals, the Kusela deal is set to change the face of empowerment in the security industry.

It is, says managing director Selekane, not a case of empowerment. It is a case of enablement. "We are helping people to help themselves with a genuine transference of skills and training. Job creation and opportunities for staff at grassroots level to improve themselves, are the cornerstones on which Kusela is being built," he says.

Working in partnership with ADT Security Guarding, Kusela staff has access to a comprehensive range of tools, which foster and encourage the enablement of those disenfranchised and disadvantaged by the previous dispensation.

Selekane, a renowned motivational speaker and businessman and Bongani Raziya, a self-made businessman, have brought world-class training, motivation and general business acumen to the table while ADT's partnership contributed market credibility and experience.

ADT Security Guarding, which was started in 1998 with 200 guards, currently has more than 3000 guards deployed on a daily basis and operates a fleet of 36 vehicles. ADT Security is South Africa's largest monitoring and armed response service provider. It services more than 200 000 clients on a daily basis and has over 500 operational vehicles. The company's operational footprint covers major centres in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape as well as the Free State.

The guarding division specialises in industrial guarding, corporate and commercial guarding, and logistic services and has recently opened a dedicated digital surveillance and off-site monitoring department. In January this year, a customer service department was put in place providing its customers with a direct client liaison facility.

The fledgling Kusela/ADT alliance is already demonstrating the power of partnerships with Kusela recently clinching the guarding contract at Old Mutual's head office in Cape Town and Vodacom's regional offices also in Cape Town.

"All our guards are empowered employees. They are encouraged to share in a vision in which they can participate - a better, safer South Africa for all.

"Both Kusela and ADT Security Guarding subscribe to the belief that the transference of skills and expertise is a form of enablement as opposed to empowerment. In our view enablement means our people are equipped and encouraged to grow in their career and reach for the next level, thereby improving their station in life with dignity and honesty," concludes Selekane.
