Complete fire safety in any environment

Issue 2 2021 Fire & Safety

Fire safety on the African continent needs to consider the many applicable and different relevant standards, regulations and installation rules. Due to the severity of fire in the loss of property and life, there are regulations in building standards, installation standards as well as manufacturing standards.

XtraVision conforms to all applicable equipment standards with its range of Hochiki fire detection products. Not only complying with industry standards, but in many cases exceeding local requirements, Hochiki’s range of products virtually eliminates false alarms and also offers ease of installation.

Hochiki provides a scalable fire detection solution for buildings, commercial and industrial sites, plants and mines. The fire detection solutions offer an early warning for the detection of fire, smoke, and carbon monoxide. In addition, the product offers audio and visual alarming, interfacing, and remote monitoring. Hochiki’s open protocol allows the integration of products and solutions that can service a large number of applications, without being restricted to one supplier or brand.

Automatic fire suppression is done by using a fire control detection system in combination with a control panel that triggers an extinguishant, such as water, water mist, gas, powder, and foam. These systems range from very early warning aspirating detection in server rooms triggering clean agent gases, to flame detection on fuel storage tanks protected with foam suppression systems.

The systems are therefore designed according to the National Regulatory Standards, safety rules and site requirements to mitigate the specific site's risk.

Some of Africa’s industry also needs specialised fire protection systems, for example:

• Rail – Hochiki rail approved detection provides an integrated, error-free detection solution for rail and rail infrastructure that can automatically re-calibrate every 24 hours via the Syncro Fire panels to compensate for any environmental contamination and to ensure they continue to operate reliably at the specified sensitivity.

• Marine – Hochiki’s ESP analogue addressable marine approved range has Lloyd’s Register approval, and the products have also been tested and approved to the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) standard by Germanischer Lloyd for the harsh marine environment.

• Petrochemical – Hochiki’s Safety Integrity Level (SIL) range is a standard that has been widely adopted by the global oil and gas industry. It provides targets around the reliability and performance of the safety systems used to protect such hazardous environments. All Hochiki’s SIL-approved range provides SIL Level 2 protection.
