Milestone launches local office and showroom

Issue 2 2021 News & Events, Surveillance, Integrated Solutions

Milestone Systems recently launched its first official office and showroom in Johannesburg. The company has had people operating in South Africa for a number of years, but until now has not had a dedicated showroom.

George Psoulis, sales manager for Milestone Systems Africa was at the opening, amongst all the COVID-19 precautions, to take visitors and partners through the new office and provide a glimpse of what the showroom is capable of. Using Milestone’s XProtect VMS, the company demonstrated its integration with various partner technologies, from Axis, Gallagher, Hanwha, Salto, Bosch, iSentry and others, covering traditional video surveillance functionality as well as newer AI-based systems and solutions.

Psoulis said that an open architecture is and always has been the foundation for Milestone products, which today sees over 10 000 devices integrated with the management platform, including everything from surveillance cameras to IoT devices. Its platform has consequently evolved from a video surveillance management system into a customisable system that incorporates and manages security devices such as alarms and access control etc., through to IoT devices to create a building management framework, for example.

He adds that XProtect is still a VMS, but its openness allows the integration of many other ‘things’ as well as the applications to manage them. This includes adapting its offerings to incorporate the latest developments in the platform world, which means options to process data on an on-premises server, in the cloud or at the edge (as well as management via mobile devices).

Milestone is also a proponent of the responsible use of technology, respecting people’s privacy (blurring faces in videos, for example) and complies with the EU’s GDPR privacy laws (which are similar to POPIA in South Africa). At the same time, Milestone is working to ensure the security of data used in its applications with cybersecurity enhancements ‘under the hood’.

The showroom is now live and can be used by partners to develop proof-of-concept solutions for customers, showing them what they can expect from their technology and providing access to experienced skills for the Milestone platform.
