Fake uniforms and using falsely branded security vehicle

Issue 6 2020 News & Events

In a bold attempted business robbery in Waterfall in Midrand on Monday 10 August, six to ten armed suspects driving what appeared to be a branded Fidelity ADT vehicle and wearing security uniforms entered a business park in Waterfall just before 22:00.

According to Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity ADT national marketing & communications manager, the suspects were using a falsely branded car with fake number plates and were accompanied by other suspects driving a white double cab Nissan and dark blue Audi to be used as getaway cars with unknown registrations. Hattingh says the perpetrators were able to disarm the security personnel at the entrance but were unable to gain access to the goods warehouse. “The access security team was fortunately able to activate their panic button and alert our monitoring centre,” she says.

“To an untrained eye the deception was very authentic,” says Hattingh.

She advises anyone who is unaware of an activation to rather err on caution and insist on:

1. Identifying the employee – All bona fide officers carry a PSIRA Card and Fidelity ADT ID card.

2. Check to see if the vehicle is in fact genuine. All Fidelity ADT response vehicles are equipped with bullet-proof glass on the doors.

3. If there is any doubt about the identification or authenticity of the vehicle, rather contact the control room immediately to confirm the vehicle’s identity.

Hattingh says suspects are getting more creative and brazen by the day and it is important to remain vigilant at all times.
