ChipDRIVE range of smartcard readers caters for all smartcard applications

June 2000 Access Control & Identity Management

As smartcard applications proliferate so to does the variety of smartcard reader models. In enterprise wide installations, spanning multiple platforms and computer variants, the need for models ranging from the ultra-slim portable reader for mobile users, to elegant desktop readers for senior management becomes more and more important.

These requirements have been addressed by the introduction of the ChipDRIVE range of smartcard readers from VELOCIT-e. According to VELOCIT-e's Clive Handley the range spans every conceivable requirement and even caters for multiple operating systems. A single common API (application programming interface) allows developers to integrate the entire range of readers through one set of common instructions.

Says Handley, "Should a unique smartcard requirement not be met by the ChipDRIVE range of smartcard readers, VELOCIT-e is able to develop and manufacture your own application specific smartcard reader. VELOCIT-e has been manufacturing its own in-house developed range of smartcard readers and solutions for the past five years and has built up a wealth of expertise in this arena."

New generation smartcards offer a high degree of security, but still require a PIN or a password to be entered in order to access the information stored on them. PINs and passwords can be easily compromised and certain applications require a higher degree of security. In order to achieve this VELOCIT-e offers fingerprint recognition technology as the ultimate security measure to access private or confidential information stored on the card. By providing this uniquely identifiable means of gaining access to the card, one achieves a truly private method of securing transportable information.
