Cardax Command Centre NT - what a difference a year makes!

June 2000 Access Control & Identity Management

On 30 April 2000 the Cardax Command Centre NT system celebrated its first anniversary in the public domain. Says Harry Fleming, Account Manager for Cardax South Africa, "It's been a busy year." At the launch, the system included many of the core features expected of an access control system such as:

* Site plans to navigate a site, with the ability to zoom in and out and move between connected site plans.

* Alarms management including preprogrammed alarm instructions and an Alarms Window for displaying prioritised unacknowledged and unprocessed alarms.

* A comprehensive range of reports, for example, cardholder reports and evacuation reports.

Says Fleming, "Residing on a Microsoft Windows NT operating platform means that printers and other resources on the network can be utilised by Cardax Command Centre NT system operators. As a result of this flexibility, the system has proved very popular."

The system also includes an API (application programmers interface) which enables other systems, such as building management systems, to integrate and share event related data.

New features find favour

New features that have found favour with system operators are the cardholder and site filters. Adds Fleming, "These are searching tools. Operators can select cardholders who meet a certain criteria, or filter their site items to only display a specific section. A "bulk changes" facility enables an operator to change the same property for a selection of cardholders. Combined with filtering, this is an efficient, time saving operator tool.

"During the year, features have been progressively added. The system now boasts a fully integrated photo identification system, system division to enable a site to be divided amongst operators for system management and monitoring (especially desirable in multi-tenanted situations) and site overrides (for example, temporarily changing the status of a door)."

Cardax Command Centre NT has been installed internationally on a wide variety of distributed sites in numerous industry sectors: airports, universities, health facilities and mining sites to name a few.

Concludes Fleming, "Prior to its original launch the system was extensively beta tested. Testing continued throughout the year as new features were added. As with many new systems, experience revealed some unanticipated anomalies. True to form, Cardax has dealt with these issues professionally and, as the saying goes, "it's the putting right that counts'."
