Proactive security with bicycle patrols

December 2002 News & Events

ADT Security has launched bicycle patrols in three Pretoria suburbs as an added benefit for clients in areas, which the company believes, would benefit from a more visible, proactive crime deterrent.

A team of four, fully trained reaction officers patrol the streets of a designated area in Waterkloof and two teams of two officers patrol the streets of Clydesdale and Sunnyside. There is one officer on a bicycle per 150 ADT subscribers in each suburb and according to Rian Swart, ADT sales and marketing manager in Pretoria, there have been several successes since the patrols have been operating.

"Our men have prevented cars from being stolen and residents have reported a drop in the number of people loitering in their suburbs. These reaction officers have been handpicked for this unit and are specifically trained for this function. They are all fully trained armed response officers - the only difference is they patrol their areas on a bicycle," says Swart, adding that it is common that an 80% drop in crime is experienced in areas where this type of visible, proactive patrolling is introduced. According to Swart, bicycle patrols have been operating, with great success, in areas of Cape Town and Johannesburg. The patrols, he says, are particularly effective in areas where road closures are not practical or have been prohibited.

The service will be rolled out in other areas where there is a demand.
