Compact video surveillance cameras

July 2002 Surveillance

Sony has introduced four new video surveillance cameras with a unique, compact design. The two monochrome and two colour high-resolution cameras incorporate 1/4 type IT Super HAD CCD as well as a built-in vari-focal lens.

"The Sony SSC-CX13VP (colour), SSC-CX18VP (colour), SSC-MX13VCE (B/W) and SSC-MX18VCE (B/W) a suitable choice for virtually any environment where unobtrusive, high quality CCTV monitoring is required," comments Sony Broadcast & Professional SA product manager Dave Schultz.

The compact size [58 (W) x 54 (H) x 133 mm (D) including lens], easy installation and visually appealing design of the new cameras makes them suitable for a wide range of CCTV applications, ranging from retail shops, banks, casinos, museums and offices to hospitals, schools and nurseries where an explicit message of 'surveillance' is often undesirable.

"For the first time, high quality video surveillance can add an attractive design note to virtually any interior," Schultz adds. "The vari-focal lens assists in a speedy set-up, even for nonspecialist installers. With no need to fit and back-focus a separate lens, an installer can save valuable time - needing to make just two simple adjustments to focus and focal length to suit the field of view and distance from the scene being surveyed."

For extra installation flexibility, mounting holes on both sides of the camera body allow easy installation on a tripod bracket either from above or below. Focal length of the integral F1,4 auto iris lens is adjustable over a wide (2,8 - 5,8 mm) range, and can be conveniently pre-set during installation for optimum coverage of the desired area to be monitored.

"Although the cost of the new line-up compares favourably with conventional camera designs, all models feature a 1/4 type IT Super HAD CCD sensor that assures excellent sensitivity and imaging quality," explains Schultz.

Colour versions also utilise DSP technology to stability and reliability under a broad range of viewing conditions. "Backlight compensation, turbo AGC, internal and linelock synchronisation and automatic white balance (SSC-CX13VP/18VP only) further assures optimum imaging under a wide range of ambient lighting conditions," he concludes.
