Training your employees? Get back your skills levy and more

July 2002 News & Events

All companies have to pay a skills levy of currently 1% to the government. ESDA invites persons to a training workshop to learn how you can claim back between 60 and 180% of this levy via mandatory and discretionary levies.

The workshop will be held at Bryanston Sports Club on Thursday 25 July from 10h00-12h30 and will be presented by Leon Le Roux, a training specialist who has spent the last 18 months facilitating the development of industry learnerships with the Department of Labour, the POSLEC SETA and SAQA.

Two learnerships have been developed: The Electronics Security Technician, at NQF level 4 (a one year national certificate), and the second learnership, the Advanced Electronic Security Technician at NQF Level 5, is a further one year national diploma.

These security industry learnerships have now been registered with the Department of Labour. The learnerships have been benchmarked against the Australian Standards to make them internationally comparable. This enables organisations providing training for electronic security technicians to register their learnership programmes with the POSLEC SETA.

A mandatory grant can be gained by registering a Skills Development Facilitator and a Workplace Skills Plan with the relevant SETA. Any company that enters the learnership programme will qualify for an additional discretionary grant from the government. The percentage of the discretionary grant varies from SETA to SETA. More detailed information will be provided at the workshop on 25 July. Leon Le Roux will provide a full set of information to enable organisations to register their training and complete the claim procedure.

A charge of R50 to members and R100 to nonmembers will be levied to cover costs. Lunch will be available at R50 per head (ie R100 for ESDA members for both workshop and lunch, and R150 for nonmembers. A cash bar will be available.
