Two-way gets small and smart

June 2002 Infrastructure

Developed to address the needs of customers who require small and lightweight communications devices, Motorola recently introduced its new GP344 and GP388 professional two-way radios. The compact radios are some 30% lighter than Motorola's traditional GP series and are particularly ideal for those involved in covert and customer-facing operations such as the security and retail industries.

"The radios are significantly smaller than traditional models, says Nik Patel, business manager at Motorola Commercial, Government & Industrial Solutions Sector (CGISS): Middle East and Africa. Looking at some of the features on offer, Patel says that the Escalert (the sound of an alert tone increases when a call is not answered) and Lone Worker (an emergency mode is activated if the user does not respond to a warning signal) features look set to become mandatory options for those working in high-risk environments.

The new radios are available in two models: the GP344, the 'small popular radio' and the GP388, the 'small versatile radio'. The GP344 offers operator-friendly controls and includes Private Line and 5-tone selective signalling, X-PAND voice compression, voice operated transmission, adjustable power levels and call-forward options.

The display can also show an incoming caller's name, allowing them to immediately communicate vital information without wasting time identifying themselves. In addition, the GP388 radio can store commonly used contact lists, individual unit IDs and phone numbers for instant access.
