Demand for tagging technology set to escalate

June 2002 News & Events

The demand for active and passive RF (radio frequency) tagging technology is expected to escalate on a global scale allowing business to play a more active role in risk management and taking accountability for the security of their personnel and assets.

This message was clearly spelt out at a recent function held by Wavetrend in which it announced to about 80 resellers that it had acquired Evolving Management Solutions and its sister company in the UK, I3ST.

Heading the speakers list, Bryan Nelson, Wavetrend's CEO, told delegates that never before had he seen such a high demand for the need to tag or monitor the whereabouts of people or physical assets in an efficient manner. "The greatest opportunity is right now and customer minds are wide open for new solutions to be presented to them," said Nelson who was responsible for Microsoft's operations in Africa, Middle East and Australasia prior to joining Wavetrend.

Nelson says he is astonished at this global demand that has been created in the market place for products that track people or assets. "After the events of 11 September, the US has been running around like a headless chicken. It knows something was needed, but did not have the systems to meet the requirements."

Alan Heath, who headed I3ST in the UK and is now Wavetrend's MD in that country, spoke on market penetration in Europe. "There is no doubt that UK market awareness with regard to RF Active Technology has finally reached a reasonable level of acceptance.

"In order to generate market 'pull-through' we have targeted various vertical market sectors and have managed to install what we previously referred to as our Integrated i-Trac/Wavetrend Asset management solution into prestigious sites such as Lords Cricket Ground - where it protects all the invaluable art works in the museum and Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery."

Ownership of these reference sites have subsequently been handed over to channel partners such as Securicor Information Systems, as an example, which has taken i-Trac under license and re-branded the product as SAM (Securicor Asset Manager).

Stuart Pickering, MD of Wavetrend SA added: "For some time we were rivals, but that rivalship turned into a partnership about 18 months ago when we jointly started bringing total solutions to the market and elevating our status on the market as the leading supplier of end-to-end solutions. This partnership has now culminated into the enterprise it is today."
