Successful fire village

March/April 2002 Fire & Safety

The FDIA held its exhibition by sponsoring a stand at Securex 2002. A well-presented stand provided exposure for its members to display their skills and services to the thousands of visitors. 16 Member companies provided advertising, many enquiries were received and numerous business cards were taken by the visitors.

AGM

The third Annual General Meeting of the FDIA was held at Gallagher Estates during Securex 2002. Chairman, Keith Norgate, presented a summary of events of 2001 and objectives for 2002.

A very poor turnout of member company representatives heard how the FDIA has made an impact on the local fire detection industry and all objectives set during 2001 were achieved by the Association, and how future plans for a third-party inspection organisation are under way to provide an additional level of professionalism for the industry.

A new committee for 2002 was announced. The new members are:

Keith Norgate, Sensor Technologies

Owen Smit, Security Fire Projects

Mike Wilkinson, AST

Neil Hughes, FST

Brett Birch, Aritech

Matt Kielty, IFS

Jim Grant, Chubb/AFS Systems

Gerard Peter, Hi-Tech Security Solutions

Owen Boseet, OFS

Laura Swart, PST

Peter Davy, FPA

John Goring, ASIB

Shane Nefdt, Notifier

Jim Frost, Phoenix Fire

Overseas visitors at Securex

Several visitors to Securex had the pleasure of listening to technical papers presented by worldleading companies ie Aritech, Apollo, Notifier. Mike Eager of Aritech presented the wide uses of the Vesda smoke aspiration systems with emphasis on clean rooms, computer rooms, freezers, coal conveyors and tunnels with installation tips on how to handle these difficult environments.

Mike Hamilton, MD of Apollo Fire Detectors, England, the largest independent manufacturer of fire detectors in the world, conducted a presentation on choice of fire detectors for different environments. The question of ionisation or optical detectors was covered as well as use of CO sensors.

Raed Abughazaleh of Notifier presented the new range of fire panels and fire sensors currently being offered by Notifier throughout the world. Notifier's unique combined fire detection and evacuation facilities on a single panel was explained.

Copies of these papers will be published in forthcoming issues of Hi-Tech Security Solutions.
