Unlocking the potential of smart locks

July 2019 Access Control & Identity Management, Products & Solutions

Over the past few years, the evolution of smart technology has increased in every industry. Electronic or smart locks were a new idea just a few years ago – an idea that seemed more surreal than true functionality.

The convenience of not needing to worry about a physical key, used with traditional locks, is just one of the many benefits of electronic locks. While the concept does not come without challenges and concerns, industries and businesses worldwide are taking full advantage of the potential electronic locks have to offer.

Security concerns aside, electronic locks offer a new type of convenience to both the business world and residential users. They can allow users to control access to their place of work, holiday accommodation, student accommodation or residential houses from anywhere in the world. With electronic locks, which can easily be integrated to your existing access control, there is no master key that can be lost or employees, tenants or family members that cannot obtain entry due to a key not being available. With electronic locks, access can be granted and withdrawn at any time.

Matrix COSEC has an access solution that has been successfully rolled out with one of the major gyms in South Africa – granting access to both the gym and locker facilities to its members. Here is the outline of their solution integrated with KRS-Gym and Membership Management Software.

Looking at a complete access control answer for the gym, Matrix has offered two door readers, installed at two entries of the gym for controlling access. Two door readers at two entries of the admin department for enrolment purposes and one door reader (card based) at the main entrance of the gym for their disabled members. The COSEC CENTRA Application software integrates with KRS-Gym and Membership Management Software via a Web API.

As a new member enters all his details e.g. name, date of joining, date of completion of membership, proof of address, copy of ID etc. A one-time 3-digit PIN is generated from KRS which goes to the COSEC application software.

When a new member comes to the gym, he/she will use this 3-digit PIN for the first time, but thereafter he/she will make use of the COSEC DOOR PVR palm reader (a palm vein-based access control and time and attendance terminal) for access.

An RFID card is available for handicapped members. KRS-Gym and Membership Management Software as well as the COSEC server keep track of membership durations so if a membership expires the credential will be disabled automatically.
