City surveillance for Kampala, Uganda

November 2018 Surveillance

More than two millennia ago, the people of Eurasia explored and opened up several routes of trade and cultural exchanges that linked the major civilisations of Asia, Europe and Africa, collectively called the Silk Road by later generations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping raised the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-century Maritime Silk Road. The Belt and Road Initiative aims to promote the connectivity of Asian, European and African continents and their adjacent seas, establish and strengthen partnerships among the countries along the belt and road, set up connectivity networks, and realise diversified, independent, balanced and sustainable development in these countries.

Uniview contributed to the development of The Belt and Road by providing a high quality and stable video surveillance system for city surveillance in Kampala, Uganda.

Uniview solution

Uniview provided video surveillance devices for traffic monitoring by installing PTZ dome cameras on more than 40 main roads and junctions, and NVRs for managing and storing video data. The transportation junctions belong to the Kampala City Council Association (KCCA), which initiates the project to monitor all the main traffic junctions to reduce the traffic congestion. All the cameras are connected by fibre and the KCCA can watch live views in a central control room.

At least three 3 MP PTZ dome cameras are deployed at each junction to ensure clear images for complicated scenes involving vehicles and passengers. The PTZ dome cameras also support 33X optical zoom. The PTZ cameras include Sony Starvis sensors and are therefore able to produce clear images at night for both static and moving scenes.

In order to keep the system working with the highest safety level, the NVR supports HDD hot swapping with RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. Even if one of the hard disks fails, the NVR can prevent the data from being deleted and rebuild the drive. It also supports N+1 backup which would avoid data loss. The NVR has been set up to capture 90 days of recording.
