R&D launches new full size people scanner

February 2002 Access Control & Identity Management

R&D Screening Technologies and Heimann Systems Germany have jointly launched a new product, a complete full-size people scanner, a system which reveals not only items carried on a person but also hidden anywhere within the body.

Heimann is a leading manufacturer of specialised X-ray scanning systems ranging from systems for mail inspection up to full-size cargo containers as well as automatic systems for airports. In developing this scanner, Heimann could draw not only on years of research efforts but also on practical experience gained from 22 000+ systems installed around the world.

Although the scanner is a new product it was developed using standard baggage scanner components proven over many years. This not only keeps costs in check but also ensures fast availability of spares. The scanner comes complete with all hardware needed to make the system compliant with local Health Department requirements.

The mining industry loses millions a year due to theft. The scanner is a reliable and cost effective way to pick up even small amounts of precious metals or stones on workers exiting plants, and due to the extremely low dose of this unit it is ideal for industry, as complying with strict health regulations, a person could be X-rayed over 400 times a year.

Another scope of work is the airports and border posts as South Africa is becoming renowned as a pipeline in the drug trafficking industry. With such a scanner, border police worldwide will be able to establish if a suspect has swallowed drugs or not.

Scanning is carried out by moving a person on a conveyor through a very narrow vertical X-ray beam (scan time approx 12 s). The image is immediately viewable on the screen where manipulations can be done with the further option of automatic realtime detection of any metals by means of framing the metal with a red square, specifically for the mining industries. Due to the system being PC-based the images can be stored, machines networked, remotely operated etc.
