Batteries for backups

June 2017 Infrastructure, Surveillance

In South Africa, power cuts and surges in the power grid are a reality of day-to-day operations. For the surveillance industry, downtime is not only critical, in some instances it could be life threatening. You can’t afford to have a sub-standard battery as your last line of defence. This is why Forbatt’s lead acid batteries are a solution for installers and large commercial projects.

Forbatt batteries find application in several commercial industries including the security industry, mining industry, medical industry and a host of others. For the surveillance and security industry it finds application in power backup systems, emergency lights, UPSs, solar installations, server rooms and more.

Forbatt lead acid batteries’ AGM (absorbed glass mat) and gel batteries provide stable performance, which makes them economical to use. The sealed lead acid battery (SLA), also known as a valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) or maintenance-free battery, is a type of lead acid rechargeable battery.

The SLA battery is widely used in portable electrical devices, telecom systems and power storage applications. The two common types of SLA batteries are AGM and gel. Compared with the flooded lead acid battery or wet-cell, AGM and gel batteries can be considered dry cell. Dry cell means AGM can hold the electrolyte in the glass mats. AGM batteries feature fibreglass mesh between the battery plates which serves to contain the electrolyte.

The gel battery, or gel cell battery, is an SLA battery with a gel or jellylike electrolyte. The sulphuric acid is mixed with silica, which makes the electrolyte gel-like and immobile. Unlike a flooded lead acid battery, gel batteries do not need to be kept upright, which means better flexibility in unusual installations. (Forbatt recommends the upright position.)

AGM and gel batteries, both reduce electrolyte evaporation, spillage and corrosion problems common to the wet-cell battery. Gel batteries also have better resistance to shock and vibration.

The SLA battery eliminates the need to fill up with battery water to achieve the maintenance-free convenience. This makes the SLA a much safer shipping battery, ideal for portability and perfect for maintenance-free applications.
