Partnership to streamline metallurgical security risk management in mines

GC Consultancy Services and Crest Advisory Africa have announced a partnership designed to improve the risk management processes of the security metallurgical standards in mines. With GC’s experience in African and international mining and Crest’s broad range of risk management training options, the partnership expects to reduce losses while improving output.

The metallurgical process in mining comprises all the activities that take ore from the ground, into the plants, to finally emerge as the desired product, be it gold or platinum etc. “Due to the value contained within the materials mined, there are naturally numerous risks involved in the process, explains Gordon Crundwell, MD of GC Consultancy Services.

“In addition there are many risk management and process optimisation opportunities in the operation which security and operations managers often miss because they are too close to the action and too busy to take a step back and analyse their operations from a distance,” he continues. “This is where the GC and Crest partnership can make a world of difference to mining operations.”

Crundwell has a long history in securing mining operations, leaving Sibanye Gold in 2016 to form GC Consultancy Services. Having experienced the real threats mines today face, he brings his wealth of experience to the partnership. Crest Advisory Africa operates globally, offering risk management training at various levels in a variety of verticals, including the mining industry.

Crest’s CEO, Nico Snyman notes the partnership will engage with mines, collect the latest information on their operations and devise the optimal strategy for them based on best practices and global risk management standards. He adds that the service can be used to optimise processes in existing mines, or new mining operations can launch their operations by implementing world-class security risk management processes from the start.

Following the consulting process, Crest’s training arm will be able to provide the mines with the appropriate risk management training (accredited, endorsed and PECB Global certified) to ensure their operations continue to implement best practices in future. The training on offer is tailored to different levels, from operations security supervisors to senior management, and includes both theoretical and practical training. The training also addresses the Introduction, Foundation Phase, Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor within this discipline.

“The training will enable mines to meet the King IV requirement of ‘Combined Assurance’, which requires the board to have assurance of its risk practices at every level of operations,” explains Snyman.

“The mining industry is in a squeeze at the moment,” adds Crundwell. “The integrated partnership of consulting and training services will allow them to optimise what they have and keep their operations streamlined well into the future as it provides a holistic integrated risk management perspective based on current international standards and best practices.”

Free audit

Both Snyman and Crundwell are so confident the partnership will deliver measurable results to mines they have offered a free two-day metallurgical standard gap analysis audit to interested parties with no obligation (terms and conditions apply).
