Local gas blows the fire extinguishing industry

December 2001 Fire & Safety

Alien Systems & Technologies (AST), the manufacturers and distributors of PYROSHIELD, believes that this fire extinguishing product is making a major impact on the South African market.

Overseas testing on PYROSHIELD has led to a full system approval being provided by Bureau Veritas, the second largest inspection, test and approval body in the world.

To South Africanise the product, a Marine Approval by the South African Maritime Authority has been issued and the South African Bureau of Standards has validated PYROSHIELD's approvals. PYROSHIELD falls into the IG55 classification and consists of 50% Argon and 50% Nitrogen. On discharge into an enclosure the oxygen content is reduced to approximately 12,5% ensuring 95% of all fires cannot continue to burn but still enables humans to breathe.

"Testing and approvals of the product is only one phase of the operation," said Paul Wright, Managing Director of AST. The company is also approved to the ISO 9001 standard issued by the British Standard Institute.

Furthermore, training on the product for installers is a pre-requisite for every contractor before purchase or dispatch is permitted. "AST is continually working on the add-on benefits that it can offer its contractors and end users; one of the most important is a room integrity testing service utilising state-of-the-art equipment," says Wright.

Already over 1500 cylinders have been sold and installations conducted at Telkom, Public Works Department and Dimension Data.
