Atlika integrates Western Cape

December 2001 News & Events

The Atlika range of control panels and addressable field interface units provide an integrated solution incorporating disciplines such as fire detection, nurse call, security, access control, building management, lighting control, home automation, internal/external communication and control of external systems such as CCTV.

Atlika equipment has been the preferred choice of equipment for numerous developments in the Western Cape, most notably, the multi-tenanted, seven-storey Waterside Place Development. The development undertaken by BKS Consulting Engineers and Omnicron in Cape Town required an integrated fire detection, security and access control system was required. Other system demands involved PABX/internal communication, after hour access control of lifts, remote monitoring and automatic arming of the security system. Other projects include a smart house on the Atlantic seaboard incorporating most of the disciplines mentioned above and numerous other commercial and industrial applications with their own unique challenges.

A control panel with required power supply was installed for all the above disciplines with only a two pair cable connecting all interface units and peripheral devices to the control panel. Correspondingly each individual system normally requires a control panel, power supply, required conduits, cable and related installation. Considering this duplication when separate systems are considered, the immediate savings are obvious when an integrated system is compared. Further savings are achievable as only one system requires maintenance.

The Atlika range also incorporates healthcare communication units typically referred to as nurse call units. An example of such a system in place is the 300-bed George Provincial Hospital, where a central control unit integrates nurse call related field devices with dedicated duty station indication panels and a fully fledged security system covering certain crucial areas of the hospital. Keypads located at strategic positions throughout the hospital have a dual function of arming/disarming the relevant security zones and access control to these restricted areas.

RS485 platform is used for communication between the control panel and all field devices. Generating/printing of reports facilitating scrutiny by management, medical and maintenance personnel listing all events and fault conditions date and time stamped is standard, thus providing a complete audit trail of events as they occur in the system. Furthermore, remote system diagnostics is optional with a modem.
