Pan and tilt cameras with heavy duty drives and matrix control units from Vicon Industries are being installed on the £1,2 billion Elefsina-Spata highway in Greece.
The highway is part of Greece's PATHE system and is being constructed by the Attiki Odos AE consortium lead by Aktor and France's Transroute International. Security and logistics officers responsible for the highway will be benefiting from Vicon's heavy duty, variable speed Vistar pan and tilt drives. These units are housed in a weatherproof, sand-cast aluminium casing and are capable of operating with loads of up to 35 pounds.
It is expected that the highway will create 2000 permanent jobs when it opens in June 2002. The route will also be of significant value if Athens retains the right to stage the 2004 Olympics.
Officials predict that the Elefsina-Spata route will be used by 207 000 vehicles daily. They will be observed by transport police using Vicon's VC2860 range of high resolution colour CCD cameras. The Vicon cameras have dual auto-iris modes and benefit from the extremely low levels of lag, blooming and transfer smear characteristics associated with CCD pick-up devices.
