New PoE switches

June 2016 Surveillance

As security systems are stepping into the world of IP networks, the network switch is playing a more important role. As part of this migration, the PoE switch is becoming popular.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows a single cable to provide both data and electrical power to devices such as wireless access points, IP cameras and so forth. The requirement for only one cable can save costs.

There are several common techniques for transmitting power over Ethernet cabling. Two of them have been standardised by IEEE 802.3. The IEEE802.3af PoE standard provides up to 15.4 W of DC power. Only 12.95 W is assured to be available at the powered device as some power is dissipated in the cable. The IEEE802.3at PoE standard also known as PoE plus, provides up to 30 W of DC power. Only 25.5 W is assured to be available at the powered device.

Dahua’s new PoE switch provides a reliable connection between cameras and the NVR, and also improves transmission efficiency of the video stream.

The Dahua series of PoE switches is speci-ally designed to support the characteristics of video streams to assist in avoiding the common problems of delay or latency, as well as packet loss.

Dahua’s PoE access switch offers the following advantages:

Reliable components

The power, switching chip and PSE chip are key components of the PoE switch. Dahua’s PoE switch uses products from leading chip and power manufacturers which ensures the quality and reliability of the switches.

Non-blocking video transmission

Video stream characteristics are different from the traditional streaming characteristics. A sudden increase in the video stream can put pressure on the data-forwarding capabilities of a PoE switch. The flow control function of Dahua’s PoE switch is enabled by default and a large hardware buffer can ease the sudden data peak and smooth the video stream.

Industrial-grade design

Dahua’s switch is designed to work under extreme environments, such as wide temperature ranges and in lightning areas. The PoE switch offers lightning protection mode and Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) is performed to ensure the reliability and long life of the device.

Video pressure test

The Dahua switch has passed a high video pressure test in which a minimum of 200 IP cameras were sending video data to the device, demonstrating the product’s reliability.

Dahua supports open standards and scalability in its IP CCTV systems. Transmission products, especially the PoE switch, function as an important bridge to connect IP cameras and NVRs in a variety of applications.
