Bluetooth Connected padlocks

March 2016 Editor's Choice, Access Control & Identity Management, Products & Solutions

Master Lock has advanced padlock technology with its new Bluetooth Connected padlocks. These locks offer a look into the future of padlocks, as physical keys are not required. Access and control of all the functions of the lock is obtained via a paired smartphone.

Communication between the lock and smartphone uses Bluetooth Smart technology, which is a low power consumption technology. The lock and phone are easily paired using a free, downloadable app which is available on both Apple and Android platforms. Additional access to the lock can be granted to other persons by either sending them a directional opening code via e-mail, SMS or Whatsapp, or they may download the app and be added as a guest of the lock. This enables the guest functionality of the lock via their own smartphone. Guest access can be instantaneously revoked by the user via the app from anywhere in the world, ensuring complete security control by the user.

The locks are available in a 47 mm indoor model with 7 mm shackle and the larger, tougher, weather-resistant outdoor model features a 56 mm body and longer 9 mm shackle. Both models feature die cast bodies, boron carbide shackles with dual roll pins, ensuring superior cut, shim and pull resistance. The app is 128-bit encrypted to ensure security against cyber attack.

Normal battery life is approximately one year in the indoor model and two years in the outdoor model, with an emergency power-up facility if the battery does malfunction or does go flat. A user-set directional code is used to open the lock if the paired smartphone is damaged or has a flat battery. The lock and app indicate low battery status of the lock to give ample warning to replace the battery timeously. Replacement batteries are easily obtainable and of the type used in many electronic devices and remote control units.

Industry uses include security where key control and lock activity record is paramount. Ease of use and convenience are an advantage where a lock is opened repeatedly every day. The app includes a lock activity report which serves as electronic audit of when the lock was opened or closed. Unauthorised access attempts or tampering is also recorded.
