Biometrics for cash handling services

March 2016 Access Control & Identity Management, Security Services & Risk Management, Products & Solutions

Positive authentication in the cash handling environment is key. It plays an important role in employee safety and loss prevention. PINs, encryption keys and passwords need to be changed often, are easily forgotten and can be shared. Biometrics provide a superior alternative.

Biometrics offers an easy and accurate method of authentication. What’s more, biometrics’ ability to easily integrate with other security equipment makes it an obvious choice for cash handling services and solutions.

Biometric algorithms are continuously being improved to provide greater accuracy and levels of security, thereby making available more options for integration dependent on security needs. For example, fingerprint modules that cater for live finger detection, FBI PIV certification, etc.

Biometric modules are currently integrated into cash vaults, safes, cash drawers, ATMs and cash-in-transit vehicles, to name but a few.

Suprema’s SFM Series fingerprint modules provide a biometric security solution to system integrators and hardware manufacturers, allowing them to achieve their business objectives in building intelligent solutions that accurately identify and thereby provide authorised individuals with access to secure environments. Loaded with the Suprema Algorithm, SFM Series offers powerful authentication performance and versatile external interfaces.

Suprema’s high-performance fingerprint modules include:

• SFM5500, a high-end standalone fingerprint module which is equipped with versatile external interfaces and offers comprehensive functionalities, allowing it to be used as a complete standalone fingerprint access reader by itself.

• SFM5000 is the latest UniFinger module equipped with Suprema’s fingerprint authentication algorithm. It features powerful 533 MHz DSP and is optimised for performance while minimising power consumption.

• SFM4000 is specially designed for lock and safe manufacturers looking for an inexpensive, reliable biometric solution with extra low power-consumption and compact size.

• SFM3000 is a cost effective fingerprint identification module equipped with the essentials for fingerprint identification and template storage. SFM3000 is suitable for most of the applications where it processes fingerprint recognition and a host controller is used to handle other operations.

In addition to this, each series offers different sensor models, such as: optical, waterproof optical, optical with PIV certification plus live finger detection, capacitive and steel coated capacitive.

An SFM evaluation kit (EVK) is available for each module. The EVK allows developers to quickly and easily evaluate the core functionality of the standalone modules, and provides software tools and technical documents for developing and testing application systems. The evaluation kit includes Suprema’s SFM SDK.

The SFM SDK is a collection of APIs for the interface with SFM modules. In addition to simple wrapper functions for Packet Protocol, it also provides high level APIs such as template DB management, image manipulation, etc. By using the SDK, developers can write Win32 applications quickly without knowing the minute details of Packet Protocol.
