Entertainment needs reliable storage

July 2015 Entertainment and Hospitality (Industry), Surveillance, Infrastructure

Hi-Tech Security Solutions spoke to Kalvin Subbadu, sales manager for WD Components in South Africa, about the need for adequate recording capacity in the entertainment surveillance sector.

He says that in order to ensure the safety of entertainment facility clients and reduce the incidents of fraud and theft, these environments require sometimes hundreds of CCTV cameras, ensuring every inch of the facility is adequately covered. It is therefore essential for entertainment facilities to make use of larger-scale, always-on digital network video recorder (NVR) surveillance systems with more hard drive bay counts and a greater number of camera feeds.

He points out that as entertainment facilities start using larger and more intricate scalable NVR surveillance systems, there is a heightened need for these facilities to also upgrade their hard drives and increase the capacity. Further driving this need is the emergence and uptake of high definition or 4K cameras that deliver better quality footage, but require more storage space.

This is necessary to ensure more footage can be saved on one hard drive and ultimately increase the total capacity of a digital video network (DVN), as well as afford higher durability and longer video retention periods for evaluation and analysis. It is also important for these drives to be specifically engineered for demanding surveillance environments, allowing them to function continually in an always-on NVR environment, to ensure continuous recording capability.

The WD Purple NV hard drive is purpose built for NVR surveillance systems that cater for a higher camera count and bay count in surveillance systems that are typically installed in large entertainment facilities such as casinos, amusement parks and museums.

These drives deliver a comprehensive range of features and capabilities such as high-resolution image quality, streaming video from multiple high-definition cameras, video archiving with ultra-fast data access and on-demand video playback.

The expanded workload capability of these hard drives delivers the ability to handle increased video streams and allows scalability beyond the limitations of digital video recording (DVR) systems. WD’s surveillance drives enable DVR, NVR, CCTV, IPTV and other digital video surveillance systems.

The Purple NV has increased workload capability, thereby assisting with storing high volumes of data while optimising power consumption. The lower power, assisted by a cooler operation, will improve the longevity of the drive. The Purple NV has been designed for high write environments.

The WD Purple NV is available in 4 TB and 6 TB capacities, and supports unlimited HDD bays. It has a mean time between failure (MTBF) of one million hours and is available in a 3.5 inch form factor.
