Palm-based gym access

May 2015 Access Control & Identity Management

Viva Gym has a vision to roll out a successful fitness model throughout South Africa with approximately 5000 members per club. Viva wanted an access control solution to be integrated with its KRS gym management software at one of it gyms at Hillfox, Johannesburg.

The challenges they faced included:

• The need for a hygienic solution.

• Integration with existing gym management software – KRS.

• Two different types of credentials for different types of members.

The solution provided includes:

• RFID card based wireless time-attendance and access control terminal.

• Palm vein based time-attendance and access control terminal.

Looking at the requirement, Matrix offered contactless palm vein-based door controllers to control the entry to the gym. Two COSEC door PVRs are installed at the main entrances and integrated with the turnstile. For physically challenged people, Matrix has installed a RFID card-based door controller on the third gate to provide easy access for them.

To meet client’s software requirements, Matrix integrated COSEC CENTRA with the KRS software using a Web API. This integration prevents any duplicate entries for the administrator and saves time. KRS software generates a unique PIN for any new member, which allows them to enter up to three times without palm verification. The member must enroll their palm before the three entries are up for further access. To reduce verification time and increase accuracy, Matrix offered server based identification. The COSEC CENTRA server identifies and verifies the member’s palm template in less than two second and gives accurate results, preventing long queues.

The results gained by Viva are as follows:

• Easy entry for physically challenged people with RF card.

• Accurate access control with turnstile integration.

• Better productivity with KRS integration.
