QueTel 's Asset ID TraQ software system along with HID ProxTrak RFID readers/scanners/tags, Symbol handheld, portable data terminals and IBM Asset ID RFID tags embedded in IBM PCs will help track and manage R173 million in new information technology equipment to be installed by the Virgin Islands government.
Over 12 500 assets, including PCs, routers, printers and other peripheral gear are being installed as part of the government's Y2K upgrade project. The new system will help manage the Virgin Islands government's initial receiving, periodic inventory and equipment life cycle programs. In addition, the government's information technology department is using the system to capture information on IBM Asset ID-enabled PCs and peripheral items installed at end-user locations. To initially populate their asset management database, technicians are capturing PC information such as machine type, model number, CPU type, speed and memory, serial number and hard drive capacity.
"The RFID technology allows the rapid electronic capture of information about the computer asset," explains Steve Miller, QueTel Project Manager. "This process supplements or replaces the time-consuming practice of manually gathering and recording information about the characteristics of a computer. With RFID technology and the TraQ system, the initial gathering and periodic update is done more quickly, more accurately and to a higher level of detail."
