Member of the Jasco group of companies and supplier of electronic security systems, Multivid of Boksburg, Johannesburg, has recently developed a versatile security product called Striker, one of the first products of its kind in South Africa.
While current alarm/security systems aim at alerting reaction forces and the intruders to an intrusion in an unauthorised area, Multivid's powerful intrusion detection and control system aims at chasing away the intruders, before they can inflict harm or severe damage, and keeping them out.
Typical applications of the system include protection of ATMs, safes and vaults at banks and shops; the protection of works of art in museums; the protection of computers and other office equipment in offices and schools; and the protection of equipment at unmanned containers and kiosks in the telecommunications industry.
Measuring just 310 mm wide, 220 mm high and 70 mm deep, the lockable enclosure houses virtually all the system components, which allows for easy concealment in purpose-made decorative units, if required.
Pepper gas-based
Up to six detectors can be used by the system to detect intrusion. Once an intrusion is detected, the system emits multiple-timed discharges of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) gas into the protected area.
The effects of the OC gas, also known as pepper gas, force the affected individuals to seek out fresh air, thus chasing them away. Should they return at a later stage, the system will be waiting to dose them again.
When a person is exposed to OC gas, the result is instant inflammation of the mucous membranes, burning eyes, coughing and an intense burning sensation in these areas. People exposed to this gas, which is a natural food substance and non-toxic, should recover fully within 45 min.
Canisters of OC gas are freely available over-the-counter and have been used in the self-defence industry for many years.
Any false activation of the unit is virtually eliminated by powerful signal processing together with a 'double-knock' system on the detectors.
Tamper-proof
The unit is also fully tamper-proof and has its own 30 h battery back up, should the mains power supply fail, which will automatically recharge when the mains power is restored.
For protection of large areas and to increase the amount of gas to be discharged, a slave OC gas unit, controlled by the main unit, may also be installed.
Due to its versatility, Striker can also be linked to existing alarm systems and therefore reduces redundancy.
Simple, easy to instal and easy to use with the minimum maintenance, the Striker system is the ideal cost effective way to protect valuable equipment and possessions.
Multivid is currently looking for distributors of Striker on a national level and thereby aims to assist in the creation of job opportunities.
