Clem Sunter and William Godbout to speak at ASIS 2015 conference

February will see the ASIS International, Chapter 203 annual conference taking place in Cape Town from 4 to 6 February 2015. Titled Africa: A New Dawn – Opportunities and Challenges, this is an international security conference focusing on strategies for securing assets in Africa for the next 10-15 years. It features an array of renowned international guest speakers as well as interactive sessions, panel discussions, round tables, table-top exercises (all under Chatham House rules) with real-life experiences and solutions to deal with the many opportunities and challenges of doing business in Africa, a very dynamic and fluid continent.

Two of the speakers in this year’s conference are Clem Sunter and William Godbout.

Clem Sunter is a top-selling business author, and one of the few specialists in the world on scenarios and their use in corporate strategy. He spent much of his career with Anglo American in the Gold and Uranium Division, serving as its Chairman and CEO from 1990 to 1996. He was until recently Chairman of the Anglo American Chairman's Fund, which in a recent survey was rated the premier corporate social responsibility fund in South Africa.

During the early 1980s he helped set up a scenario planning function at Anglo, and later was one of the driving forces behind the South African High Road-Low Road scenarios that helped pave the way towards the country’s peaceful transition to democracy. Since 1987, he has authored 17 books including the best-selling Fox Trilogy with fellow scenario strategist Chantell Ilbury.

He was recently awarded an Honourary Doctorate by the University of Cape Town for his work in the field of scenario planning, and was also voted by leading South African CEOs as the speaker who has made the most significant contribution to, and impact on, best practice and business in South Africa.

William Godbout became the Chief Security Officer at the African Development Bank (AFDB) in 2006, where he has designed innovative programs and managed global security for the AFDB worldwide, with specific focus on African security issues.

Prior to joining the AFDB, Godbout was an active duty U.S. Army officer who retired as a Lieutenant Colonel of Infantry and Foreign Area Officer for Sub-Sahara Africa with 22 years of active service. He served previously as the Defence Liaison Officer at the US Embassy in Khartoum, the Defence Attaché to Sierra Leone, the Defence Attaché to Guinea, the Defence Attaché to Chad, the Army Attaché to Senegal, and in various other positions at the Defence Intelligence Agency. He has operated extensively across Africa as an advisor for all military, defence and security related issues managing diverse security portfolios for the African specific security environment.
