Sensormatic SA announces formation of new JSE-listed group

November '99 News & Events

Sensormatic SA will be forming a new JSE-listed group, in conjunction with SMG Management Services (SMG). SMG is an established outsourced logistics management group holding many contracts with blue-chip companies. The new group will focus on providing logistics management, inventory optimisation, and total supply chain solutions to customers from all industry sectors. The group is scheduled to launch on the JSE via a reverse listing in November.

According to Richard Pople, Managing Director of Sensormatic SA, "this move is an exciting step forward". Established in 1990, the company has grown to become a market leader in electronic security, working closely with committed customers such as Shoprite Checkers, Truworths and Woolworths. Almost 100 employees are employed in six branches throughout Southern Africa. The main focus to date has been supplying major retailers with systems and processes that reduce shrinkage through securing inventory.

"With the advent of Intelligent Tag solutions (RFID) around the corner, and the powerful new digital products being developed by Sensormatic, we will be at the forefront in offering our customers a complete 'securing, tracking and tracing' solution throughout the supply chain," says Pople. "The association with SMG will enable us to add further value to our existing and future inventory control and management solutions due to the high-level expertise and skills resident in SMG."

Adds Pople, "We will shortly be changing our name to 'Sensormatic Solutions' reflecting the growth of our added-value services, and the new group name will be announced shortly."

Commercial and industrial companies

In line with the new Group's strategy, a business unit has been formed within the company to directly address the electronic security and asset protection needs of commercial and industrial companies. With the emphasis on providing integrated, quality systems, installed and project managed by experienced professionals, the new division will complement the retail division in delivering highly-competitive and well-supported solutions for medium and large projects.

Neale Strauch, Manager of the new Sensormatic Projects division, adds, "For some years now, a number of the more experienced players in the industry have been discussing the concept of starting a 'Mega' company which will set new levels of service, quality and product performance, backed up by some of the best in the business. Sensormatic's excellent reputation in the retail market, together with its outstanding success in the BAC Cape Town Urban Surveillance project, make it the perfect company to launch this concept nationally."

Sensormatic Distributions will remain a separate company outside of the listed group, continuing to distribute a wide range of access control, CCTV and other related products exclusively to dealers.
