Twisted-pair video transmission systems

October 2001 Surveillance

The transmission of a video signal is an essential part of every camera installation. Twisted-pair cabling is considered to be both inexpensive and suitable for transmission of video signals up to 1500 m. A typical system consists of a transmitter connected to a coax cable or connector, which is then converted to a signal suitable for transmitting over twisted-pair cable.

Housed in an IP65 weatherproof enclosure the E-TWT transmitter converts coax to twisted-pair for transmission over long distances. Signals are terminated inside the enclosure with screw-terminal connectors.

The E-TWM is a compact coax to twisted-pair video transmitter. About the size of a D-cell battery, it features a BNC connector and screw-terminals. This allows the unit to easily connect to the rear of CCTV cameras and to fit inside camera housings. Powered off 12 or 24 V a.c./V d.c., it is compatible with the E-TWRB/E-TWRR receiver units.

The E-TWRR receivers receive a twisted-pair cable from a E-TWM/TWT transmitter and convert it back to a coax video signal. This can then be connected to a monitor, switcher or recorder. It can be supplied encased in an IP65 enclosure or for larger installations in 19" rack mount format. The rack mount version includes a rack incorporating up to 10 euro-card modules and a power supply. This format helps keep an installation orderly and reduces unnecessary cables. Each euro-card module features a screw terminal block and BNC connector at the rear.
