SABS approves Pyrogen

May 2014 Fire & Safety

Pyrogen has achieved the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) mark in respect to SANS 15779: 2012 – ‘Condensed Aerosol Fire Extinguishing Systems – requirements and test methods for components and system design, installation & maintenance – general requirements’.

The offering from Alien Systems & Technologies (AST) passed the required product testing against the SANS. Further, AST’s production facility was inspected by the SABS to determine whether it had adequate quality assurance systems in place (SABS ISO 9001) to ensure that product quality can be maintained consistently. Additionally, the SABS then conducted ongoing audits of the quality management system, along with regular and ongoing tests of the product, obtained from either market outlets or the factory, to verify that it still meets the specifications of the SANS.

This means that consumers can trust products with the SABS mark. Not only has an initial batch of the product been tested to show that it meets the required standard, but further batches will continue to meet the standard.

Pyrogen is an inert non-toxic solid that remains stable until electrically or thermally activated, whereupon it produces a gas-like extinguishing aerosol. The aerosol attacks the fire chemically and physically, giving virtual instant extinguishment and preventing re-ignition, and in certain instances, explosions.

The principle of the extinguishing action employed by Pyrogen is unique – a special solid chemical, when electrically or thermally ignited, produces combustion products – micron sized dry chemical particles and gases. Dry chemical particles (mainly potassium carbonates), and gaseous mixture (mainly carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour) mix together into a uniform fire extinguishing aerosol.

“Pyrogen is the ideal fire safety product for applications such as switchgear and substation protection”, says AST business development manager, Grant Wilkinson. As it is the only aerosol fire extinguishing system with SABS approval, it makes very little professional sense to be using any other offering on the market.”
