Security solution for new landmark in Berlin

Located at the intersection of the Kurfürstendamm and the Berlin Zoo, the new highrise named Zoofenster, designed by Christoph Mäckler, sets architectural as well as urban accents in the heart of the German capital.

Situated right next to historic Breitscheidplatz with the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the new landmark of the City West is home to the 5-plus star Waldorf Astoria Hotel as well as numerous stores, restaurants and offices. The building owes its name, which stands for ‘Window to the Zoo’, to the distinctive multi-storey glass front in the top floors that give open views to the zoo nearby.

In the Zoofenster, Bosch has designed and implemented an integrated and networked security solution with fire and intrusion detection, video surveillance, access control, electro-acoustic systems and a central management system which is tailored to meet the varying needs of the individual users. This was a particular challenge in the design of the security system as hotel, shopping mall and offices have very different requirements.

A highlight of the integrated solution is the complex fire protection concept, which was implemented by a network of several fire panels. Overall, the fire detection system has a fire matrix with more than 4000 control points and covers 270 different fire scenarios with 1.6 million links. Thus, in every conceivable scenario a fast and accurate alarm is guaranteed.

“For us, the networking and integration of the different security systems was a key criterion in the selection of the partner in this area,” says André Pernhold, managing director of City Asset Management GmbH, which served as a consultant to the investor during the planning and construction of the Zoofenster. “At Bosch, we have not only found suitable solutions for all our requirements, but also the expertise required for the design of an overall solution.”
