The Meadowdale residents and business people have successfully reduced crime in the area by 5%. Bryan Taylor, Chairman of both the Meadowdale and the Bedfordview Community Policing Forums (MCPF and BCPF), attributes the reduction not only to the partnership formed between the South African Police Services (SAPS), the public and the business community, but also to the concept of 'visible policing'.
Taylor was speaking at a recent press conference held in Meadowdale, to announce the successes of the initiative.
Meadowdale forms part of the Bedfordview policing precinct in which a combination of day and night patrols is utilised as well as a dedicated basestation, which has resulted in a 60 s response time to emergencies on the part of the police who are in the area constantly.
The conference was addressed by Minister for Safety and Security, Steve Tshwete, who applauded the initiative.
The ongoing success of the Meadowdale CPF has resulted in plans for a modified version to be implemented in the whole of Bedfordview. The plan involves dividing the area into five sectors, with 20 patrolling policemen on a two-shift basis and also evolving the police and public relationship into one of trust, friendship and respect.
