Axxon opens shop in SA

August 2013 News & Events

Recognised by IMS Research as the largest vendor of open video management software in the European EMEA market, Axxon now has an office in South Africa.

According to Axxon South Africa’s business development manager, Richard Hepplestone, the company was founded in Russia in 2003 and has grown to 33 countries, with over 250 employees. “Of interest is the fact that over two-thirds of these employees are software and system developers. The original software was developed to be an open platform for analogue solutions. It has since grown to cover IP network based devices. Today, the company has a number of hybrid (analogue and IP) solutions that cater for everything from small, basic video management needs to massive enterprise wide integrated solutions.”

Hepplestone explained that there are two solutions available from Axxon: Next and Intellect. “Next is a pure video management system with a software platform that allows one to view and record video from various cameras and analogue devices. This essentially provides a customer with ‘analytics out of the box’. It allows potential issues to be highlighted to the operator, which in turn allows the operator to speed up the reaction time to an event. It is user friendly for both customers and integrators.”

Axxon Intellect is a security integration platform with similar capabilities as Axxon Next, plus onward compatibility. “It is an advanced distributed physical security information management (PSIM) platform that combines intelligent video analytics, universal IP connectivity and event-driven automation capabilities in a single environment. It has facial recognition and licence plate recognition capabilities and readily integrates with other systems such as fire and access control. The LPR component is incredibly powerful, allowing recognition and recording of vehicles travelling at up to 250 km/h,” said Hepplestone.

“In addition to the standard product offering, we also have specialised solutions. These include Auto Intellect, which can monitor traffic on major routes. It can provide analytics on, for example, how many cars travel in each lane over certain time periods, or the ratio of motor vehicles to trucks and motorcycles.

“Another product is POS Intellect, which is a retail solution. It can combine a number of solutions in one. For example, facial search can be used to track a known suspect’s activities in the store in order to find suitable footage for a prosecution. There is also of course, integration with POS systems, which not only provides traditional (searchable) text overlays, but also allows you to create notifications on ‘risky’ actions such as returns or manual overrides. These could be complemented by access control systems for predefined access to sensitive areas and LPR to capture vehicles moving in and out of delivery and parking areas,” Hepplestone added.

“By integrating all the systems ourselves, we are able to save costs for our customers and to relieve them of the problems associated with multiple software vendors. The cost saving benefits are exacerbated by the fact that we do not charge for software maintenance and support,” he said.

Axxon demonstrated the product offering to the South African market through a series of roadshows which kicked off in Durban at the Durban Country Club on 23 July. This was followed by events at Montecasino in Gauteng on 25 July and the River Club in Cape Town on 26 July.
