Licence cards manufacturers awarded ISO 9002

September 2001 Access Control & Identity Management

Prodiba, which manufactures and personalises driving licence cards for South Africa on contract to the Department of Transport, has been awarded ISO 9002 certification from the SABS, making it the only card-manufacturing company in Africa to receive this quality assurance listing.

The Prodiba plant - a joint venture between Face Technologies - a subsidiary of arivia.kom, and Thales - a subsidiary of Thomson-CSF and NKOBI Holdings - started manufacturing driving licence cards in March 1998 and to date has manufactured 4,2 million cards. Dr Randall Carolissen, the Group Managing Director of SABS Holdings, handed over the certification award to the Managing Director of Prodiba, George Stander.

Bureau Manager Riaan Visser says the plant achieved certification, which ensures quality management systems in production, installation and service, on its first attempt and after only one visit by quality assessors.

Says Visser: "Being listed as an ISO 9002 company assures our client (the Department of Transport, our customers - licensing authorities in all nine provinces and end-users (any person who is licensed to drive a vehicle in South Africa) - that we have the ability to produce licence cards able to meet worldwide quality requirements. We can say with confidence that each and every product that leaves our premises is a quality product."

Visser says that being a start-up plant with high security made it easier to ensure that the plant met exacting standards of quality with all procedures in place from day one.

Apart from manufacturing the driving licence cards, Prodiba also supplies the ISS (Image Scanning Sheet) forms that are being used by licensing authorities to capture the photograph, signature and fingerprints of an applicant; card reading devices for use by law enforcement officers to verify the information contained in the two-dimensional bar code; and fingerprint pads used to capture the fingerprints on the IIS forms.

Concludes George Stander: "This certification proves that South Africa has much to offer not only on the African continent but globally as well."
